The Maldives will be the best position to view the longest-lasting annular solar eclipse of the Millennium on January 15. An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun, so the Sun appears as a very bright ring.A 300 kilometre swathe of the world from Central Africa and across the Indian Ocean to China will be plunged into darkness when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow on Earth’s surface. It will be the first solar eclipse of 2010 the longest annular eclipse until the year 3043. The Maldives will be the best place to view the eclipse of the Sun because it will be affected for the longest period of time.
