Neither my sister or myself ever really had much in the way of opportunities when we were young. She played the violin for a few years through the high school band program, but that was about it. However, now all of our daughters are skilled with a musical instrument. Both of mine are proficient on piano, but her oldest daughter chose acoustic guitar instruction and her youngest takes violin. They both do very well. Her daughter has already surpassed what her dad knows and her teacher has never had a student stick to it as long as she has, which is really great.
